Renewable Sources of Energy by Navtej Kohli

Navtej Kohli has started conducting research on generating energy from trash and other renewable sources. Navtej Kohli gives insight into what is meant by renewable sources of energy and what are the different sources available today.

Considering the global increase in population and shortage of fossil fuel, renewable energy offers the best alternative to the growing needs. Renewable energy sources can be replenished in a short period of time and do not get exhausted.  The five most often used renewable sources:

  1. Biomass – Biomass is an organic material made from plants and animals which contains stored energy from the sun. The energy from sun is trapped by the plants by a process called photosynthesis which in turn passes their chemical energy to animals and humans that eat them. Biomass is a renewable energy source because we can always grow more trees and crops, and waste. Examples of biomass fuels are wood, crops, manure, and garbage.
  2. Water – Generating electricity from water, hydropower is one of the oldest sources of energy. Mechanical energy from water is derived by directing, harnessing or channeling moving water. Water is stored here by creating dams.
  3. Geothermal – Geothermal energy is the heat energy from within the earth. We can use the steam and hot water produced inside the earth to heat buildings or generate electricity. Geothermal energy is a renewable source of energy source because the water is replenished by rainfall and the heat is continuously produced inside the earth.
  4. Wind – Wind is the simplest form of energy because wind is basically air in motion. Wind is caused by the uneven heating of the earth’s surface by the sun. Wind energy is mostly used to generate electricity.
  5. Solar – The source of light during day, the sun has produced energy for ages.  Solar energy is the sun’s radiation that reaches the earth. Solar energy can be converted into other forms of energy, such as heat and electricity for households, buildings and other places.

Use of renewable energy is not new. Five generations ago, wood was the only form of energy used. Due to low price of fossil fuels such as coal and oil, use of renewable energy sources fell down. Now people have become more aware of the growing concern and shifting to renewable sources.

Overall consumption from renewable sources in the United States totaled 6.8 quads in 2006, or about 7 percent of all energy used nationally.

Energy generated from renewable sources is nature friendly and does not even harm the society. Navtej Kohli, an advocate of use of renewable resources has conducted a lot of research and written reviews on different theories on the renewable energy sources. Read more to know about these sources.
